Washington State is a beautiful place to travel to for wonderful and scenic road bike or motorcycle riding. Here are five different areas in the Pacific Northwest that offer the views to stimulate the mind, and the rides to stimulate the heart.
- Bellingham to Anacortes via Chuckanut Drive: This is a world-class ride that follows the beaches and cliffs of the pacific coast. Views of Lummi and the San Juan Islands are amazing. There are great places to stop along the way to take in the view. There is also a campground and park, Larabee National Park, that is a beautiful overnight stop if doing a multi-day ride.
- The North Cascades Highway: The highway is closed during the winter and if caught right can be a spectacular ride with the road literally all to yourself. This ride gains a goodly amount of elevation so be ready for your legs to burn, if on a cycle. According to the National Geographic Traveler this is “One of Americas grandest, most spectacular drives.” So imagine it on a bicycle.
- Circumnavigating Lummi Island: Take the quick ferry to Lummi Island from Bellingham. There is a nicely paved road that circles the outside of the island. This is a tranquil ride, with the road often being quiet for miles. There are wonderful places to stop along the way, sit on the beach and enjoy a tasty lunch. The locals make an amazing Clam Chowder. A great ride for the entire family!
- Bellingham to Mount Baker Ski Area and back: This is an all day ride with a good amount of steep uphill, so make sure to bring extra treats. This ride goes through the Mount Baker National Forest and the small towns of Glacier and Deming. This is a great ride because of the country feel and the views of Mount Baker and Mount Shucksan. Be sure to have some miles under your belt before attempting this ride.
- Circumnavigating Lake Samish: This is a half day ride that starts from Fairhaven, outside of Bellingham and travels around the forested setting of Lake Samish is also a great loop for the family. There are public beaches to stop, have lunch or maybe a swim. The water is a great temperature for swimming.
