Baguio City - the Summer Capital of the Philippines

The Philippines is known for its beaches, historical sites and hospitality, but keep in mind that it is a tropical country near the equator. The months of April and May are usually the hottest months of the year, and the hottest temperature ever recorded in the country was 42.2 degrees Celsius. Most tourists who are not used to such a hot climate often retreat to Baguio City, also known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

Weather and Climate

When the rest of Manila is sweating with heat, Baguio maintains a cooler weather, and actually gets the most amount of rainfall in the entire country. The city boasts of naturally chilly weather - around 10 degrees Celsius lower than the rest of the country, pine-smelling winds, and is a fine respite from the dust, heat and bustle from the nearby lowlands. Baguio has only two seasons of about equal duration the entire year - the wet season (May-October) and the dry season (November-April).

Landmarks and Scenic Sites

Baguio City has many popular and attractive tourist destinations such as the Baguio Cathedral (a rose-colored cathedral located on top of a hill in the heart of the city), Asin Hot Springs, Camp John Hay, the Philippine Military Academy, Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary, and Mt. Santo Tomas. The chirping of the birds, the crackling sound of the leaves and the cool, pine-smelling breeze will make you fall in love with the place.

Things to do in Baguio

Baguio is a popular golfing destination. The former American recreation facility Camp John Hay has a world-class Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf course that earns a reputation for being one of the country’s best. Camp John Hay also has six tennis courts, a six lane bowling center, basketball and volleyball courts, and a heated swimming pool. You can also go flying with a number of air charter companies which offers a perfect way to browse the Banaue Rice Terraces. Tourists can also go horseback (or pony riding, since ponies instead of horses are available) on Wright Park or go for a ride with a guide. Shopping for souvenirs is also one of the activities tourists can engage in. Prices are relatively cheaper and there are an assortment of items to choose from ranging from silver works at the popular Ibay’s Silver Shop to fruits, veggies and hand-crafted materials at the local market.

How to get there

Baguio is accessible by land and air. You can also choose from a variety of transportation methods once inside the city, and even book hotels online since majority are fully booked during peak seasons.
