Chamonix is at the center of an amphitheater of mountains that tower over the small village. The town is a quintessential European town with cute architecture and cafés lining the streets. The cobblestone streets and horse drawn carriage carrying tourists gives the impressions of times long ago. The village is created in such a way that bustling streets filled with the sounds of various languages allows for great people watching. Winter allows plenty of skiing for all abilities. The French are known for their love for skiing and their creative ability to put lifts where it is hard to believe possible. There are three major ski resorts within a few minutes of the city center, Grand Montet, Aiguille de Midi and Le Brevent.
The summer allows for “The Sound of Music” type views and landscapes. There are single track trails that wander through the mountains linking an intricate hut system. The huts are the combination of tasty restaurants and sleeping accommodations.
One of the most impressive tram systems in the world accesses the top of the Aiguille de Midi. The tram spans more than eight thousand vertical feet and has a total of three towers; the base, mid-station and top. The engineering that was needed to create such a masterpiece has yet to be duplicated. From the top it is an easy ski or hike into Italy.
There is also a train station in Chamonix, as is common in all European towns. Yet, this train travels through the Alps giving a close and up front view of the pristine forests of the French Alps. The beauty that is seen from the seats of the train is hard to surpass anywhere in the world.
