Child’s Play in Boston

Planning a trip with children can be nerve-racking, especially when you don’t know the area. The last thing you want is for your kids to look back on family vacations as being the most boring time of their lives. So maybe you should check out Boston. At times, Boston seems as if it has more to offer little people than their parents. Here is a list of activities that will keep your children entertained for hours and not have you singing Disney songs for the rest of the trip:

Walks and Tours

  • Make Way for Ducklings is a children’s classic and there is also a tour to match the book. The Historic Neighbourhoods Foundation provides a 90 minute tour, which follows the path taken by the Mallard Family, ending at the Public Garden. There is also the Ducklings Day Parade every Mother’s Day. Reservation for the daily tour is required. Call 617-266-5669 for to book tickets.
  • Boston By Foot provides a special walk for children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old: Boston By Little Feet. It’s an hour long walk exploring the architecture and history of the Freedom Trail.
  • Take a Duck Tour around Boston in the legendary amphibious World War II landing vehicles. After a drive around Boston, with a narrative from the ConDUKtor, who are legendary for their humor, you will drive straight into the Charles River and see Boston and Cambridge from a different few. The tour last about 80 minutes, 20 of which are in the water.

Museums Kids Will Love

  • Boston Children’s Museum is a great mix of educational exhibitions with tons of fun and games in between. The Museum places an emphasis on a hands-on approach to children’s learning, so all the exhibitions are interactive. They have a list of their current exhibitions on their site, which will give you a glimpse of what to expect, but the photos don’t really do the museum justice in terms of how engaging it can be.
  • Museum of Science is better for slightly older children and also interesting for adults. The Museum has an impressive exhibition schedule, which rotates and changes on a regular basis.
  • New England Aquarium is a must, even if you don’t have kids. The site features a virtual tour to give you a sense of what to expect. Again, the calendar of events and exhibitions almost guarantees you will be able to see something out of the ordinary. At the moment they have the Amazing Jellies visiting the tanks. The Aquarium has also recently become home to northern fur seals. It’s the first time the Aquarium has had these species.
