How to Document Your Trip

These days, how people record their trips varies hugely. With Internet cafes popping up in locations that don’t even have running water, using the Internet as a means to document your trip is pretty handy.

Make a Travel Blog

If you’re reading this site, it probably means that you are interested in what travel blogs are out there and you might be somewhat familiar with the nature of blogging. Besides being a useful source of information for other people, travel blogs are also a great way to record your trips and share them with people at home, either when you get back or while you are away. There are a number of sites that specifically cater to travel blogs:

  • Travel Blog offers free blogging space, free photos upload and categorizes your blog according to location.
  • Travel Pod has been around since 1997 and prides itself as being one of the first group travel blog sites. It too offers free blogging space.

You can of course use a standard blogging platform that isn’t affiliated with a travel site!

Try Photo-Sharing

If blogging isn’t your thing or you don’t have the time to do it, photo sharing is another way to record your journey. Photography tends to be an important part of people’s trips. If you’re taking digital photos you’ll want to have someway of uploading and storing them, even if you’re travelling with a handful of memory cards.

Photo-sharing sites are great because they often have quick upload time and you don’t need to save anything on your computer. If you are travelling with your laptop, you will probably be less concerned with upload time and other details, but if you have to use an internet café, how long it takes to put your pictures on a site will matter to you. Below is a list of popular photo-sharing sites. Take a look through before your trip. Decide with layout you like and make sure you have an account set up and know how to upload photos:

This list is not definitive but I’ve included those whose layout and upload time I find to be the quickest and easiest to use when travelling.

Unfortunately, if you’re using standard film, you’ll have to wait until you get home to share your photos. Remember, to pack your film in your stowaway. Film is often ruined when it passes through x-ray machines at airports. It may not always affect it - I’ve been lucky a few times -but you may end up having some of your film ruined. So watch out.
