Romantik Hotel Villa Abbazia, Follina, Italy - Travel Journal - Thursday, October 23, 1997

An entry in the TFS Travel Journal.

A lovely night’s sleep in our Veneto paradise hideaway. We were happy to be back in our favorite little breakfast room, then we strolled the market which encircled the hotel along the streets of the town on Thursday mornings. Certainly nothing too exciting, but some nice things as these affairs go (we did pick up some delicious broccoli and bananas).

Milton then drove off in search of the Nevegal ski resort to do some solo hiking, while Wendy luxuriated in our suite, enjoying her privacy and solitude and reading “Dreaming in Cuban”. Milton, meanwhile, almost had another temper tantrum vainly attempting to find this place despite following instructions perfectly, before coming upon it far after the point at which he’d been told it would be.

Nevegal is a lovely, old, small ski area, and was completely deserted; allegedly, there’s mountain biking, but no sign of any today. I walked up a quite-steep and strenuous run for about 700 meters, sometimes following right under the chair lift, then arrived at the top and the requisite restaurant (boarded up for the summer). The view was, I presume, spectacular, but not today as everything was shrouded in a damp fog that kept visibility to about 100 feet. It was quite fun to be walking all around a ski area in the summer, seeing everything so green and so thickly forested and imagining it under all that white. Then, as great dining experiences go, the grapefruit I had when I got back to the car was definitely one of the best!

After a rejuvinating shower (which was lukewarm until we called the front desk and they turned some switch and it then got sufficiently thermal), we dined en suite on the chicken Wendy had bought earlier from the market, the cheeses from Tuesday’s picnic, fresh tomatoes and our delicious mustard. (Just getting back in shape for the Balducci’s dinners soon to be eaten off our kitchen counters) Then, a restful and relaxing evening.
