Ten Foot Square is glad to present this real world travel journal that documents the adventure of two individuals as they travel the entire world. Many of us dream of such a trip, and we hope that this journal inspires you to take the plunge and make your traveling dreams a reality.
In June of 1997, I quit my job so that I could fulfill one of my lifelong goals of traveling around the world for a year or so. My wife was a bit surprised when I announced to her that that’s what I wanted to do, but since she shared my interest in exploring, learning and seeing new places she soon became as excited as I was. Her only requirement was that we come home every now and then and not be away for an entire year, so that’s how we did it.
Although we spent close to a year traveling, it’s amazing how many places we DIDN’T get to. There are many reasons for that, but we were happy with the choices we made. And it’s always a tradeoff between depth of experience and how many places one can actually see. At the bottom, though, it’s all a matter of personal preference – Big cities? Small towns? Natural sights? Gourmet food? Outdoor activities? When/how much to relax?
We’d originally sent out our daily Travel Journals to a small group of our friends and family. Although this was 1997/1998, we actually managed to log on and send them from just about everywhere we went, with the exception of our African safari. Keep in mind that these are all a product of a time and state of mind. While as I peruse them now I might want to make some edits, I will leave them as I wrote them at the time.
